We couldn’t deliver EAAA’s 24/7 life-saving service without the kindness, skills and enthusiasm of this incredible group of volunteers across Bedfordshire, Cambridgeshire, Norfolk and Suffolk, and are pleased to shine a light on their collective achievements. Last year, they helped almost 2,000 people receive treatment and care from EAAA’s doctors and critical care paramedics directly at the scene of medical emergencies, which included cardiac arrests, road traffic collisions and medical emergencies.
Trevor Dane, from West Norfolk, has been volunteering for EAAA for over two years. He initially helped with bucket collections in supermarkets, and now gets involved with a wide range of activities, including attending cheque presentations, giving talks to groups about the work of EAAA, and supporting fundraising events in the community.
“Volunteering is an opportunity to help my local community,” Trevor says. “I previously volunteered for King’s Lynn Citizens Advice Bureau, and at my local hospital. I am interested in aviation, health and wellbeing, so volunteering for EAAA is a perfect match for me.”
Trevor previously worked in a family business for 35 years and believes that volunteering helps him to manage this time effectively and utilise some of his skills and knowledge from his working life.
“Being part of a wider team, working with other volunteers and staff, and being able to transfer skills and knowledge built up from work and previous volunteering, plus the flexibility that volunteering offers are just some of the highlights for me,” Trevor adds.
Trevor recalls that, during his first year with EAAA, he was taking photos of the Anglia Two (Cambridge) helicopter, which was on the helipad at the Queen Elizabeth Hospital in King’s Lynn when he had an unexpected opportunity to see the helicopter more closely.
“When the crew returned to the helicopter, pilot Eduardo saw me with my red EAAA cap on,” Trevor explains. “He came over and took me over to the helicopter for a look around and to take photos. I did not expect this when I got up that day and it was a memorable moment.”
When Trevor is volunteering with others out and about in the community, they meet many people who speak fondly of their experiences and connections with EAAA. Often these are people who have been attended by the crew following a medical emergency, or people who support EAAA in some way, such as fundraising or through regular donations. These positive responses make him feel proud of the combined achievements of EAAA volunteers.
Collectively, EAAA has a great team of volunteers who always work well together and individually. I feel that if a small part of my contribution helps others that need the skills of our pilots, medics and the teams that support the crews, then I am happy.
— Trevor, EAAA Volunteer
Stepping into 2025, Trevor is taking on a new volunteering venture with EAAA. Passionate about his local area, he is helping to run the new EAAA King’s Lynn Fundraising Group to raise the profile and awareness of EAAA in West Norfolk, as well as continuing to attend events in the community and finding new fundraising opportunities to support EAAA’s 24/7 life-saving service.
“Volunteering with EAAA is an opportunity to give something back to the community. A chance to use skills and improve them, make new friendships and, as I no longer work, it’s a great way to spend some of my time. It’s a fantastic local life-saving charity, a great team of supportive volunteers and staff, it offers flexibility, and there are many different roles to choose from. You can do one or several roles it’s up to you,” Trevor adds as he encourages other people to get involved and enjoy the volunteer opportunities EAAA offers.
“As a volunteer, I like to think that all that I do for the charity directly helps to save lives*. It’s fun volunteering for EAAA, and now that we have the King’s Lynn Fundraising Group in operation, with a small group of volunteers, I hope we are making a difference to the charity and those that need EAAA when they most need the help of our highly skilled crews.”
*Trevor, you really are helping to save lives. Thank you to you and all EAAA volunteers for your boundless enthusiasm, time and energy that you give to the charity. You are ensuring people in our region have the best chance of survival and recovery following a life-threatening medical emergency.
