A team of 15 medical professionals, including EAAA’s Dr Sophia De Maria and CCP Rob Riches, operated on Matthew for an hour and a half before transferring him to Addenbrooke’s Hospital for further treatment. After several operations and a huge sense of determination on his part Matthew made an incredible recovery, and his mum Sue wrote the below poem for those that saved her son. Please read through and be sure to give your loved ones an extra hug this Christmas. Many thanks to Sue and Matthew for letting us share their story with you.
Thanks to a Stranger
As this season encloses its mantlOf joy, heartfelt warmth and good cheerAs we gather our loved ones around usTo welcome the end of the yearI’ll attempt to express the words ‘thank you’For that day I can never forgetWith a gratitude so monumentalTo those heroes I barely have met
Now parts of this story are dismalNot perhaps a great Christmassy themeBut to gather just how much it mattersYou need to grasp every extremeThis one has a miracle endingWhich still fills me with wonder aglowAll down to the teamwork of strangersTo people I don’t even know!
On a late summer morning in AugustIn a heartbeat our world turned aroundOn an axis of unforeseen horrorWith barely an audible soundIt happened so terribly quicklyHe suddenly felt quite unwellIn a second of desperate anguishHe begged me for help and then fellI was wholly unable to stop itLike the sun going down on the dayA shadow drew near, the outcome was clearAnd I watched as my son passed away
Time stood perfectly still for a lifetimeAs I pumped his chest over againWilling his heart to start beatingCalling and calling his nameI felt such acute desolationFuelled on with imaginings wildAs I counted in dire desperationTo the unseeing eyes of my child
You appeared like a quiet tornadoAnd swept in with an unsurpassed mightThis team of amazing life giversBrought in hope and a true ray of lightThe hours that followed were endlessAs you waged your own war against deathWith incredible skill and composureAs we held an interminable breathYou stayed by his side on his journeyTill safe in the hospital’s careThen like all superheroes before youYou vanished right into thin air
Like a thief time stole away seasonsAs autumn went by in a hazeOf lung operations and healingIn a world full of hospital daysI am blessed with such friends and my familyWho stoically stood by my sidePicking up all my lost marblesAs Matt took it all in his strideI have never seen bravery like itOr felt pride to such depths of degreeAs my son recovered completelyAnd raced back to Uni once free!
Every day I wake up and I wonderHave you any idea what you’ve done?In your world of such everyday strugglesDo you know that this battle was won?I know we’re a drop in the oceanIn your daily life changing affrayBut I want you to know from the depths of my heartYou saved more than just one soul that day
When you sit with your loved ones at ChristmasJust know there’s a family out thereWho will never be able to thank you enoughFor your strength and incredible careFor all that you are as a beingAnd all that you do every dayYou are simply and truly amazingPaltry words will never portrayThe gratitude felt from this MotherWhose whole world was askew for a whileBut who sits here tonight and thinks of you allWith hot tears and a so thankful smile
I hope you have time to make merryTo relax and take time to have funYou gave me the best present everThe gift of the life of my son.
“Thank you!”
